CPD Industry Requirements in New Zealand?

Many sectors across New Zealand have mandatory Continuing Professional Development requirements to ensure high standards are maintained. Here’s a breakdown of some key sectors:

Finance

Financial advisors, accountants, and auditors have a responsibility to maintain their knowledge of the ever-changing financial landscape encompassing regulations, products, and best practices. Chartered Accountants are required to complete at least 120 hours of CPD over three years. 90 hours of these must be verifiable CPD and a minimum of 20 CPD hours must be completed in each year. Regular CPD ensures they provide comprehensive financial advice and maintain public trust.

Construction

As a member of CIBSE you are required by the Code of Professional Conduct to maintain your professional competence. The Institution provides clear guidance and support for professional development, enabling you to develop in your career. From January 2023, it was mandatory for CIBSE Corporate Members, and those working towards chartered status in New Zealand to complete 150 hours of CPD every three years. New requirements were set around the breakdown of CPD hours, and how sub-disciplines within building services engineering are treated. For example, if you work in one area of practice, 50 hours must relate to your area of practice, 10 hours must cover risk management, 15 hours must be about business management skills and 75 hours must cover a range of activities relevant to your career interests.

Law

In New Zealand, lawyers are required to participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to maintain their skills and enhance their overall effectiveness. CPD goes beyond just staying updated on legal statutes ("black letter law"). It encompasses developing communication skills, understanding and applying the Client Care Rules, and honing a variety of self-management and practice management skills. The CPD rules mandate that lawyers complete a minimum of 10 hours of approved activities annually, create a written CPD plan outlining their learning goals, and reflect on their professional development throughout the year. Finally, lawyers must declare their compliance with these requirements by the end of March each year.

*These are just a few examples. It's important to check with your specific industry association or regulatory body to determine the exact CPD requirements for your profession in New Zealand.
