Most training providers already believe in the quality of what they teach. The harder question is how a learner, an employer, or a professional body is supposed to know that too, without just taking your word for it. That’s the entire purpose of CPD accreditation, and it’s worth understanding properly before you decide who to trust with it.
Why Accreditation Actually Matters to Learners
For a learner, CPD accreditation isn’t a badge on a certificate for decoration. It’s the difference between “I attended something” and “I can prove I’ve done recognised professional development.”
An accreditation that can be independently checked is what makes the difference between a certificate someone can actually use and one that just looks nice. And learners do check: research from The CPD Register in 2025 found that 80% of the learners surveyed said they always verify a course’s accreditation status before enrolling.
That verification piece matters more than it might seem. A learner who can show a unique certificate, tied to a real, checkable accreditation record, has something genuinely useful for appraisals, revalidation, or professional body requirements. At The CPD Group, as a general rule, one hour of structured learning equals one CPD credit, so the certificate also clearly states how much recognised learning was completed. A learner with only a generic “certificate of attendance” doesn’t have the same thing, even if the training itself was just as good. For training providers, that gap is exactly why accreditation is worth getting right, not just getting done.

How to Choose the Right Accreditation Body
Not all accreditation is built the same way, and it’s worth knowing what to actually look for before committing to one, since the differences matter more than they first appear.
Is the assessment genuinely individual, or a blanket approval? Some accreditation processes assess an organisation once and then wave every future course, webinar or podcast through automatically. That’s a much lower bar than assessing each activity on its own merits, and it means the accreditation says less about the specific thing your learner is actually doing.
Are the criteria actually published? A body that tells you exactly what it assesses, in detail, gives you something concrete to work towards and something a learner or employer can check for themselves. Vague assurances of “quality checks” without published criteria are harder to trust and harder to improve against.
Is there an independent way to verify accreditation? A certificate is only as strong as a learner or employer’s ability to check it’s genuine. Look for accreditation that’s listed somewhere independently verifiable, not just a logo you’re trusted to display honestly.
Does it cover the range of activities you actually deliver? Courses, webinars, events, podcasts and internal employer training are genuinely different formats with different demands. A body that only really understands one format will struggle to assess the others properly.
How do they treat their own claims? This one’s worth watching closely. The ASA has upheld multiple complaints against CPD accreditation bodies in recent years, including over an unsubstantiated “UK’s leading body” claim and misleading claims of government approval. How an accreditation body describes itself is a reasonable indicator of how carefully it will assess you.

Where The CPD Group Fits Into That
We’d rather show you this than tell you, so here’s what’s actually true and checkable, not a claim asking you to take our word for it.
Every activity we accredit is assessed on its own merits, rather than receiving a blanket approval once you’re an approved provider. Courses, trainers and employers are each assessed against their own published framework.
Our Course Framework sets out criteria including Accessibility, Content, Creative delivery, Relevance, and how learner progress is Tested, so you know exactly what we look for before you apply. Webinars and events go through their own practical processes instead, since a live session and a recorded course aren’t assessed in the same way.
Every activity we accredit is submitted to The CPD Register, an independent body that’s separate from us, so a learner or employer can verify accreditation status themselves rather than relying on a badge alone.
We’re the first CPD accreditation organisation to be certified by The CPD Register ourselves, which means independent scrutiny has been applied to us too.
We work with over 13,000 approved providers across more than 170 countries and 100 industries, and we’ve issued more than 3 million certificates to date. We also accredit podcasts: once a podcast is accredited, the podcaster receives a unique accreditation code to read out, and listeners use it to collect their CPD minutes and download their certificate.
None of that is a claim that we’re better than anyone else in a way we couldn’t back up. It’s just what we actually do, and it’s exactly the kind of thing worth checking for whichever accreditation body you choose to work with.
Choosing With Confidence
The right accreditation body isn’t the one with the loudest marketing. It’s the one whose claims you can actually verify, whose criteria are genuinely published, and whose process treats your specific course, webinar, event or podcast as worth assessing properly on its own.
